The Former Soviet Union's Advanced Equipment - Titanium Alloy Helmet

Titanium Alloy Helmet

Speaking of military helmets, everyone is familiar with them. From the early steel helmets to today's Kevlar helmets, every change reflects the progress of human military technology. However, there are also unknown alternative helmets in history. For example, the Soviet Union and Russia once equipped a large number of titanium alloy helmets.

The outstanding advantage of titanium alloy is its high strength, but it is much lighter than ordinary metals, making it an ideal bulletproof material. However, the processing technology of titanium alloy is very complicated, which makes it very expensive, and there are very few titanium alloy bulletproof materials actually produced in the world. However, the former Soviet Union is an exception. They have abundant titanium metal raw materials in the country, and their titanium alloy processing technology has always been in the world's leading position. The titanium alloy bombers and titanium alloy submarines they once developed were performance monsters of that era.

So it is not difficult for us to understand why only the Soviet Union developed and equipped a large number of titanium alloy helmets. The history of the Soviet Union's use of titanium alloy helmets can be traced back to the mid-to-late 1980s. At that time, the Soviet special forces in Afghanistan began to be equipped with STSh-81 titanium alloy helmets. The helmet weighed 2.4 kilograms and consisted of three titanium alloy bulletproof plates with a thickened inner layer to reduce impact. Its improved version is the STSh-94, which is more common in photos. This type of helmet can be seen being used in operations including the Beslan hostage crisis. The Soviet Union also once equipped a 6B6 heavy titanium alloy helmet, which looked very strange in appearance, like a mask worn by a welder, and weighed 3.5 kilograms. Due to its heavy weight, it is usually used in anti-terrorism operations and is not very suitable for field environments. The helmet adopts a spherical helmet body, with an integral mask that can be flipped up in the front and an observation slit. The helmet can meet the GBS-P-5 protection standard, which is the highest protection level required by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Due to the high price, these titanium alloy helmets were only equipped to the Soviet Union's most elite special forces at the time. Titanium alloy helmets could be seen in the Afghanistan War, the Chechen War and all previous anti-terrorism operations. The bulletproof ability of titanium alloy helmets is absolutely unquestionable. Not only can it easily deal with various artillery fragments, but it can also resist the shooting of 5.45 and 7.62 mm ordinary bullets at a long distance, which is unmatched by modern Kevlar materials. But titanium alloy helmets also have big problems. After all, the weight of two or three kilograms will still affect the combat effectiveness of soldiers if worn for a long time. Therefore, since the beginning of the new century, it has gradually been replaced by Kevlar helmets.

However, the bulletproof ability of titanium alloy is still very attractive. With the continuous development of titanium alloy materials and processing technology, a large number of high-performance and low-cost titanium alloy helmets may appear in the future.
